NOTEBOOK:
INDOT chip seal work is scheduled to begin today and last approximately five days on U.S. 52 between Rushville and Morristown. Daily road closures are planned from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Access will be maintained for local traffic only. After a curing period, crews will return to fog seal the new driving surface and apply pavement markings.
Glenwood’s Town Council will consider a new animal ordinance at its regular meeting Monday, July 14, at 7 p.m., at Town Hall. The ordinance would replace the town’s 2018 regulations and limit animals within corporate limits to traditional pets and small animals, with some exceptions. Up to 10 non-roaming chickens (no roosters) would be allowed under specific conditions. Exceptions—such as for 4-H animals, pygmy goats, and emotional support animals—must be approved by the council in a public meeting. The full ordinance is available at glenwoodtown.com and the Glenwood Post Office.
HOOSIER NEWS: There are approximately 11,000 trees representing 135 tree species inside the gates of Crown Hill Cemetery and Arboretum. (IndyStar)
NATIONAL NEWS: Heart attacks are becoming rarer and more survivable than they had been in years past. The proportion of all deaths attributable to heart attacks declined by 90 percent from 1970 to 2022, a period over which heart disease fell from causing 41 percent of adult deaths to just 24 percent. When hospitalized for a heart attack in 1970, a man over 65 had just a 60 percent chance of leaving the hospital alive; today, that’s about 90 percent. This is thanks to some broader societal shifts — for instance, the massive decline in smoking and the popularity and availability of statins to manage cholesterol — as well as the adoption of CPR and development of portable defibrillators. This Day in Rush County History
News around Rush County as reported on or about this date in history. Selections are curated from newspaper archives and library genealogy materials.
2015: The inaugural Family First Event was held at South Veterans Memorial Park. Angie Paugh had organized the event, which included free food and activities.
2005: City offices were up and running on broadband. Mayor Bob Bridges said the system was much faster than the old dial-up internet.
1995: Approximately 250 children, teens and adults attended Madcap Productions’ “Forest Full of Fables” puppet show at Laughlin Center. The event, sponsored by Trane, was in conjunction with the library’s summer reading program.
Rushville’s 14-year-old Babe Ruth team defeated Connersville, behind a strong pitching effort by Jake Martin. Rushville players who got hits were Tyler Alspaugh, Josh Morgan, Steven Mock, Jim Levi and Jarrod Springman. The team advanced to play New Castle in the district tournament.
1985: Ralph Vierling was elected Rushville Rotary President. He received the gavel from previous president Floyd Wiley.
Brian Murphy won the curtain act category of the Rush County Share-the-Fun contest with his drum solo “Different Beats.” He advanced to the next round, to be held in Hagerstown.
1975: Paul Smith was named principal at Arlington School. Smith was a 1961 graduate of Rushville. He and his wife Elizabeth had recently moved to 329 West 11th Street. Smith replaced Mr. Robert Saunders, who was transferring to Manilla school.
1965: The Rush County Junior Republican Club held a swim and barbecue party at Craig’s Lake. Dinner was held at the Cole Banks cabin. Meat and drinks were furnished by the club, and each girl was asked to bring a covered dish. Micki George and Pam Hughes were the organizers.
1955: Several Glenwood residents filled the B&O railroad station to object to the railroad’s petition to abandon and remove the station. The company was seeking to make Glenwood a prepaid agency dealing only in carload shipments. Less-than-carload shipments would be delivered to the Rushville station. Joseph Jarvis was the railroad agent in Glenwood.
1945: Sgt. Clarence Lanham, a wounded veteran from Rushville, was honorably discharged at Camp Atterbury. He had earned multiple medals, including a Purple Heart.
The Republican reported on the possibility of “phones” in cars. According to the American Telephone and Telegraph Co., the service “only awaits manpower and materials to build the needed equipment.” (A description of the “phones” more accurately reflects CB (citizens band) radios, which were developed in the late 1950s and began to be widely used by truckers in the early 1970s.)
1935: Local Boy Scouts and firemen combined forces to tear down 332 East Ninth Street. The lumber was salvaged by the Scouts to build a cabin in Memorial park. The frame house had stood empty for years and was regarded as a fire hazard.
1925: City Council opened bids for equipment to generate more electricity. The present load was taxing the equipment, and more factories had indicated a desire to get on the system.
OBITUARIES
Rebecca Ann Gulde, age 59, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away at her home on October 14, 2024, surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. Rebecca was born on March 16, 1965 in Rushville, Indiana, the daughter of Joseph Francis Gulde, Jr. and Janet Irene (Dearinger) Gulde. She moved to Ft. Myers, Fla., with Joseph and Janet in 1981, graduating from Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Ft. Myers in 1984.
She returned to Indiana briefly where she studied Computer Programming at ITT Technical Institute. Back in Florida, Rebecca worked in various roles for the Lee County Tax Collector for over 28 years.
Her love of the Dallas Cowboys was as undisputed as her love for family with whom she watched countless football games over the years. She loved going to the movies and attending concerts and live theater when she could. She loved birthday dinners at Red Lobster, shopping, traveling and lots and lots of chocolate and Coca Cola.
Rebecca is survived by siblings Joe Gulde III and his wife Mari, Nick Gulde and Steve Gulde; two nephews, Justin Schnitker and Tyler Gulde; one niece, Alyssa Gulde Meadows and her husband Aaron Meadows.
Visitation will be held Saturday July 19, 2025, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Todd Funeral Centre & Crematory. Private burial for the family will be at Rushville’s Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the ASPCA.
